HISTORY

A Little History:
Our story begins in Pocatello, Idaho, circa 1972, when the lovely Debby Christensen agreed to a first, though fateful date with admirer, David Croshaw. Long story-short, he bade her follow him, and they went arm-in-arm to the Logan, Utah temple for establishment of an eternal family unit, Generation 1, on May 23 1973.

From their first blissful summer in Salt Lake City, educational pursuits took them to Provo/Orem, Utah, birthplace of Leslie and Rebecca, and to San Francisco/Oakland California, birthplace of Colin and Matt. Then, for establishment of livelihood, expansion of the tribe with Abby and Dana, and for raising/unifying of Generation 2, it was back to the roots in Pocatello for a rewarding sojourn.

In time, driven by a raging, but commonly shared sense of adventure and independence, one-by-one, Generation 2 escaped the homeland to distant regions of the country and the world, each ultimately developing their own tribal expansions by pairing with worthy mates and initiating Generation 3.

Now sensing fulfillment of their purpose in Pocatello, Generation 1 has also left those roots and transplanted to Cascade Idaho, from which base, they anticipate more abundant contact with The Posterity, Generations 2 and 3, in the future. That contact however, awaits fulfillment of a call to LDS missionary service in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, wherein they hope to help the state of the world by sharing the love of Jesus Christ.

So now, including Generation 0 (Grandma and Grandpa Christensen) home base includes Yuma, Arizona, Pocatello, Idaho, Cascade, Idaho, Vancouver, BC, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Spokane, Washington, Boise, Idaho, Los Angeles, California, back to Boise, Idaho, and on and on (Generation 3+) to infinity.

Our Mission Statement:
This is the blog of our eternal family unit. Initiated years ago, it served well as a journal, but even more so, as an archive of our personal interaction. It was a gathering place, a confabulation instrument, a unifying force for four generations of widely dispersed and progressively prolific posterity, and their valued associates. Though it served these purposes well for many years, it eventually took a back seat to new-kids-on-the-block, Facebook, and Instagram, and was sadly forgotten.

We now move to resurrect this blog with an added functional purpose of archiving the missionary experiences of Generation 1, of their movements and activities as they participate with The Gathering of Israel in the land northward. In so doing, we hope that via their own comments and posts, this blog will again serve to gather and unify the posterity and their friends.

As in the past, that the young and vibrant may know the old and tired, that enduring bonds may be fostered and maintained, that experience and encouragement may be openly shared, that posterity may embrace truth, and that hearts may be knit together, we must resist detachment despite our geographic divergence. We shall do so here.

Glad someone broke the silence. I was wondering if everyone had died - but then, I knew you hadn't died Debby. I'm still wondering about everybody else though.

i think what has happened is that many people are using facebook as their blog. ;-( i'm not on facebook, and really don't want to join. so pretty please, post on the blog(s)!

I did, I did I made a big deal of it in my LAB LOG BOOK
! then again, I am a big number dork. I count things, remember things... I know every zip code I have ever lived within (and that is a lot of zip codes), all my ID numbers from college, UVA, JMU, work... 32 steps to the first floor, 29 more to the second. It sure does make life so fun to count things all the time. It is MADDENING at times to try to stop... I really don't need to know the roller mixer clicks three times with each revolution. But I do.

Awesome! Good to know there are others like me! YAY! As for postings. I just feel like this is the happy blog and I am so overwhelmed right now there is just not too much to say. HOWEVER! I am WAITING WITH BATED BREATH FOR FURTHER REPLY ON HOUSEBOAT ENTRY BELOW! Come on, people!!

I know, Les. I have been slacking on the blog. In my defense, we have been crazy busy trying to get ready to move, on top of the 4 kid thing. The thing about facebook is, it is so easy and fast. You can spend as much, or as little time as you want, and it is a really good way to keep in touch. You REALLY should join. You can be friends, or not, with whoever you want. You could just use your married name and not include your maiden name if you want to remain more anonymous. So join!! (you too, mom!)

I am banning Facebook Les. I mean I got to stop somewhere, what is next Twitter? I did join linkedin to boost my professional career(??) We will see.

So, I got on the blog and noticed that this post had 8 comments, now 9, and I thought, great, people are back at it. So I got on and discovered that three of those were very short commments, all Mom's, and all to cover the same point, and then two are mine, and two Crystals. So of the 9 comments, 7 of them are from 3 whole peole.

By the way Crystal, Debby's number fetish has saved our necks many times. I comes in handy. And, speaking of Lake Powell, we need to vote on a year for this to happen. Jason and I were thinking 2010, but then it sounded like that would not be workable for some who suggested 2011. So evreyone put in your opinion on this.

Becky, I have joined Facebook, but I apparently don't understand how to navigate it, and there is so much dumb stuff that comes through, like I got invited by someone to be involved in some game called Mafia Wars. Don't have time. You can check in on the blog every once in a while and catch up, but it seems you have to be on facebook all the time to maintain. The blog is really a better gathering place because it's not about any individual, but about the whole group/family.

OK, so now there ar 14 comments. Now that's what I'm talkin about.

David I am an avocate of double digit comment counts of posts. But padding the numbers by posting comments about the number of comments. And that being the only point of the comment? That is pretty boarder line.

And the safety kids cassette tapes taught me to remember my phone number. "I know my number, my telephone number it's 323-8225". "...sometimes you just have to yell and scream, some times its the only thing to do, noisy as a fire truck, you just have to open up and get the crowds attention turned to you..."
Anyone else ever listen to the safety kids songs?
And I'm really disapointed I didn't realize it was 7-8-09. I had been waiting for that since 6-7-08. Now I'll have to wait for 8-9-10.

Seriously Dad, Facebook is not the devil. I have tried to figure out why you think the whole "individual" thing is such a big deal. Just because you are on Facebook does not mean you have to answer every invitation you get. I have a list of about 200 things I just don't respond to becuase I don't want to. Facebook is like expanded email. You can get updates on a whole lot of people without having to send out tons of email. And by the way, the whole point of Facebook is social networking and keeping track of people. Blogs are the same thing in a different form. Facebook has a lot of filler that can be ignored very easily. I don't do it to be in the spotlight, I do it to see what's going on with my friends who I never see. I wouldn't know anything about most of them without Faceook. And I'm not on there very much by the way.
I heard a stat recently. Retention after 1 month is only 40% for Twitter, but is 70% for Facebook.

Colin & Lori said...

Lori: I don't like facebook either!! It is hard to navagate and it is just ONE MORE THING to check up on and maintain. I really have enough, as most of us do, to keep me busy. I figure if I am going to spend that kind of time I have time for other things of maybe more importance.
Colin is very loyal to his friends and easily filters through what he wants to pay attention to and what he doesn't. I find facebook overwhelming! Now, I am done with my soapbox and off to check my facebook account.

Not really!

By the way Dad, I'm not sure posting your DEA online is such a great idea. I would post mine but I don't want half the city trying to get drugs with it.
Facebook is like anything else, it's only as important as you want to give it time to be. It will take all your time if you want it to.

Crystal said...

Is that Jenny's number? Actually I heard any time it is available it gets sold to radio stations for lots o money. Here is a scary one; my former debit card number when I wad married . It would use it online almost daily. 7188 0012 6217 5234. Sad I know.

Crystal said...

That is supposed to read "was pre-married." I am married now too. The only one, let's keep it that way! I used to order Outback or Applebee's every night for dinner and I had a slight addiction (true, real) to a certain children's clothing store... it was the only thing that made me happy outside of seeing Valerie. So. Soooo. Sad. Thankfully, things are much better now. I have no idea what my debit card number is! :-D

OK, 28-32 - number of bones in your foot; 1x12x12 or 1x6x24 - dimensions in a board-foot of lumber. Its all about feet - those are my kind of numbers. Is that a legitimate post Jason?
And Colin, it's all the junk you have to sift through - messages of friends of friends (people you don't even know) that bugs me about Facebook. Maybe I'm just not willing to sacrifice the time necessary to get good at it. If I got into it, I would probably like it, but like Lori said, regardless of how efficient it is, it's just one more thing to take up your time.

Colin, good advise about the DEA # (note we took it out,) something I didn't think was a big deal, because ZERO would be the number of drug seekers I have had to deal with this quarter, which is great. Word must be out on the street that I don't put out. Sorry you probably have to deal with them every day - the nature of ER. Maybe ObamaCare will fix that.

By the way, Abby's out in the bush, with no internet, but if she could post, I bet she would give us some numbers which are multiples of 12. You'll have to ask her what that means - hint: 84.36% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

OK, 31 is the number of this comment - a new record. Look what you started Crystal. You've uncovered something that excites everyone - Except Alex and Ray. Where are you guys? I know you've both got some number issues.

Colin

abbynormal said...

Okay, I'm out of the bush and ready to input. Of course, I love it when I get to talk about numbers! I'm actually a little sad to be entering so late in the game. Are people still reading this one? Mom, thanks for posting something to take the attention off my silly poem. I'm sure I would have noticed the date if I'd even had a chance to look at a calendar that day.

*233-3886 bff in elementary school's phone number.
*34-16-10 locker combination in 7th grade.
*Does anybody really not know my statistical rule of 12's?
*And a story: I had to file an accident report to my insurance, and I remember glancing at the claim number and making some random, nonsensical connection. Soon after, I had to call them back and ask about something. They asked for the claim number, and I told them I didn't have it on me, but I think it was 73-09-1494. It was. I think they thought I was crazy.

As for facebook. Definitely not using it as my blog. I'm still sort of on a halfway boycott of facebook, so I'm not even on there very often, and I'm kind of a snob about who I'll be friends with (e.g., if we've never even had a real conversation, I don't want to be your virtual friend). Studies have actually shown that students with fb accounts actually get worse grades than students who don't (I'm sure it's about 12% lower GPA), so I'm wary of the time I spend on there. Dad, there are settings where you can ignore all invites from people who send you too many, and also to not get emailed about every little thing that comes your way. It makes it easy to not get sucked into getting on too frequently and then spending too much time on there when you do. I'll show you when I come home.

Colin & Lori said...

Abby - I don't know your rule of
12s. Pleas explain.
And was that an unnecessary apostrophe I spotted in your post? Is it the posession (sp?) of the 12? I expect more from you.
Colin

abbynormal said...

My rule of 12s (I think in the US, an apostrophe would actually be acceptable there. We like to apostrophize our plural numbers. British-style keeps it out, and I tend to follow that one more because I like it better. So thanks for the catch, Colin. Anyone want to correct my logic?):

Anyway, my rule. If anyone ever asks me for a statistic (because apparently statisticians know all statistics by heart), the answer always has 12 in it. Whether it's 12 million, 1/12, 12%...no one ever questions the power of the 12. It just sounds satisfactory to everyone. Hasn't failed me yet.

David and Debby said...

Question on the rule of 12s Abby (actually, I'm just trying to push the comments to 40, but mindful of Jason's earlier critique, I must maintain some relative logic in the comment): Can't the rule also include factors or multiples of 12, e.g. my example that 84.36% of all statistics are made up on the spot? Seems I've seen that modification applied in the past, and it would make the rule much more versatile and less likely to be detected. Just wondering, and still waiting for Matt, Alex, and Ray to chime in.
Dad

Jason and Dana said...

I think Matt, Alex, and Ray saw near 40 comments(now 40) and thought, no way am I starting now to read all those comments. I don't have a half hour to spend reading comments.
Colin, please don't look at my grammar, spelling or use of punctuation. Because I am academically challanged when it comes to that subject. I remember taking the self paced reading lessons in grade school. I still remember looking at the 's lesson. I thought I already knew how it worked, so I thought every word ending in s needed an 's. And when I got to grade it myself and pass it off I got 100%. Opps. or is it Oops? I think it is Oops. Spell check, where are you?
Jason

David and Debby said...

Abby, even though we've broken 40 comments, I still need an answer on the factors and multiples question.
Dad

David and Debby said...

Speaking of numbers, this is a record day. Not only do we now have 42 comments on this post, but check out the world map below. 15 separate hits today. I think that's a record too.

David and Debby said...

Still waiting at **46**! for Abby's clarification of the rule of 12s. She's probably waiting for number 48 (multiple of 12).

abbynormal said...

Hey, remember that Abby is in a different time zone! Patience, patience. I don't actually use the factors trick, although I certainly wouldn't write off the possibility. I'm telling you, no one ever questions 12!

...and I think it's obvious: 40+ comments comes from a family obsessed with numbers!

David and Debby said...

OK, I guess I'll have to do 48. Obsessed with numbers or records - in this case they're the same I guess.

I'm disappointed that you don't get into the factors/multiples, because it would make the rule so much more multifaceted. But maybe simplicity is best.

OK, who's going to push it to 50?
Dad

Colin & Lori said...

I'll make a comment but I won't stoop to your level. My attending asked me a percentage question today. I said 20%, but the first thing I thought about was 12%. The answer was actually 10-15%, so if I would have said 12 I would have nailed it. I should have listned to your logic Abby.
Colin

Crystal said...

Here is a good one: I made 10% formalin solution today. That is Formaldehyde (H2C(OH)2) and ddH20. Since formaldehdye is generally at 37% in aqueous solution, a lot of undergrads make a final solution of 10% formaldehyde... so diluting the H2C(OH)2 by 3.7x... really what you do is make a 10% of a 37% of the solution... or dilute the formaldehyde 10x to make 10% formalin. That is a ten fold difference in concentration...

Dilutions make people crazy, but hey... it is a necessary evil. Can't have your friendly MD prescribing 10x the amount of drug you need, eh? Acutally my ex father in law nearly died of just that in the hospital by an inattentive nurse injecting 1000x strength insulin. That sure was fun. Numbers are important. Just not physics... I kid! I KID!!!

Looks like this may go on forever - that's infinity.

David and Debby said...

Oh, I just remembered. Here's a good one. I was watching "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" the other night, and the the $16,000 question was "What is the value of Pi?". The guy didn't know so he used the first lifeline to narrow it down to two possibilities: 3.1416, and 3.2783. He still wasn't sure, so he uses the second lifline and calls a friend. Friend was a little hazy on it also, so the guy uses the third lifeline and polls the audience. The audience favored 3.1416, but after mulling that over, the guy didn't believe them, so he chooses the wrong answer. Seems the Darwin Principle should apply here.
Dad

abbynormal said...

So, turns out that if you eliminate all the comments about what number of comment we're on, there are only 12 left. Crazy, huh?

David and Debby said...

the pi question was actually between 3.142 and 3.1someting something. i can't remember the other three, but i knew it right off. if it had been more that 3.1412, i would not have known. have you heard that people can only remember 6, or is it 7 numbers in a row? mom

abbynormal said...

It's 7. I have no idea how I originally know that, but I remember hearing it again in a class last semester.

Colin & Lori said...

I made about infinity of those as scout camp.

David and Debby said...

Abby, On your comment about comments, you were obviously applying the Rule of 12s, at least the part about making up statistics on the spot. I'm onto you now. I just counted, and if you eliminate the comments that deal strictly with the number of comments, there are actually 48 left, proving the validity of multiples.

And, regarding your last comment, personally, my limit is 6.93 numbers in a row.
